3 Health Issues Resulting from Poor Oral Health

3 Health Issues Resulting from Poor Oral Health

While one likely knows how important it is to regularly visit the dentist for your oral health, he/she may not realize how poor oral care can lead to other health issues, too. Here are some of the most common health issues that result from poor dental care.

1. Respiratory Infections

Poor oral health can also lead to respiratory system issues. Bacteria present in the mouth from swollen gums and infected teeth may be breathed into the lungs and eventually travel into the bloodstream. When this happens, a number of health issues may occur, including COPD, acute bronchitis, pneumonia and respiratory infections.

2. Cardiovascular Disease

Did you know that poor oral health can actually put you at risk for heart disease? If your gums have become inflamed due to bacteria, which is responsible for periodontal disease, then the same bacteria can move into the bloodstream and cause the arteries to build up plaque and then harden.

When the arteries harden, the condition is referred to as atherosclerosis – and this is extremely serious. Over time, this problem can lead to heart blockages and blood flow problems. It also increases the possibility of a heart attack. Also, the impact on your blood vessels and arteries can result in hypertension and increase the risk for a stroke.

3. Diabetes

It’s important to note, if you have diabetes, you are already much more susceptible to an infection, such as infected gums that can lead to periodontal disease. However, if you do develop periodontal disease, it can make it more difficult for you to control your diabetes.

The symptoms may become worse as your blood sugar levels continue to vary due to gum disease. It is extremely important for you, if you are diabetic, to always take good care of your teeth and gums. This will help to prevent issues and complications related to this condition.
