Choosing the best breath mints will come down to personal preference. Some people love the overpowering minty freshness, while others enjoy using chewable Mentos.
Unfortunately some “breath freshening” products like candy mints go beyond illusion and actually cause tooth decay and bad breath by feeding sugar to the bacteria in your mouth.
So, keep these five helpful tips in mind in order to have a truly fresh and clean mouth.
1. Brush tongue
Many kinds of bacteria live all over tongue. Although they’re a group of harmless microorganisms, these bacteria can lead to bad breath and even tooth damage. So, brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth. It’s pretty simple: brush back and forth, brush side to side, and rinse your mouth with water.
2. Skip the flavoured mouthwash and gargle with hydrogen peroxide
Instead of going for the liquid that smells the best, go for the one that cleans the best, says the professional oral hygienists. Gargle with peroxide for fresher breath. Treat it like your favourite mouthwash. Just swig, swish, and spit. The oxygen in the hydrogen peroxide kills mouth bacteria that cause bad breath. Here’s more about Gargling with Hydrogen Peroxide: Benefits and Side Effects.
3. Stay hydrated
Dehydration is a common, if lesser known, cause of bad breath. When we don’t drink enough water, the spit dries up and can’t wash away the bacteria, allowing it to build up in the mouth.
4. Treat infections
That cold going around right now can morph into a sinus infection, another common cause of bad breath. Post-nasal drip, when the snot runs down the back of your throat, can make you smell as sick as you feel.
5. Eat more yogurt
The good bacteria in yogurt helps balance out the bacteria in your mouth, leading to fresher breath and whiter teeth.
