Another 3 Oral Health Tips for Winter Season

Another 3 Oral Health Tips for Winter Season

As winter sets in, you may notice its impact on your oral health. We discussed “3 Oral Health Tips for Winter Season” here. And you may want to follow these additional oral tips to deal with common winter health problems.

1. Disinfect Toothbrush

Toothbrushes are a fertile breeding ground for a number of strains of viruses and bacteria including the ones that cause the common cold and influenza. For this reason, the National Dental Association suggests that you replace your toothbrush every three months and clean it thoroughly at least once a week. Here are a few ways to do that:

  • Boil your toothbrush for about 3 minutes. Although it is hard on your toothbrush, boiling water will kill most germs.
  • Get a UV toothbrush sanitizer. These nifty gadgets work by combining steam with dry heat to sanitize your toothbrush. However if you don’t want to shell out the money, studies show that soaking your toothbrush in Listerine works almost just as well.

2. Avoid Chapped Lips

Dry or chapped lips lips are related to cheilitis, the cracking of the corners of the mouth. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, cheilitis is frequently caused by wind and cold air, which dry out the lips and lead to cracking of the skin. Although dry or chapped lips can be a pain — and painful — to deal with, you can treat them by keeping hydrated and wearing lip balm with an SPF of at least 15.

3. Treat Sensitive Teeth

Cold winter air can exacerbate tooth sensitivity. If you experience short, sharp jolts while breathing in the cold air, try a desensitising toothpaste. If your teeth seem even more sensitive than usual, it may be time to visit your dentist – tooth sensitivity can be caused by many things, from a cracked or fractured tooth, to enamel erosion. They will be able to tell why your teeth are sensitive and offer you the best treatment.
